College is all about creating your own path. On your path, you come across new routines, new friends, and new experiences. There’s a stop along your path that you should definitely consider: a sorority. Why? Because school is naturally overwhelming for many people.

Sororities act as guides for familiarizing girls with the college. It’s more than a club. These girls may go from acquaintances to roommates, to lifelong friends years after college! The Wall Street Journal mentioned that many close-knit sorority members have supported each other’s weddings, jobs, and children. Here are some of my suggestions on how to choose the sorority that best fits you:
First, find out when recruitment is! Some schools have formal recruitment during the first semester of the school year while other schools have deferred recruitment. Deferred recruitment simply means recruitment will take place in the spring semester.
Familiarize yourself with the sororities at your school. Usually, a list of Greek organizations is on your school’s website. I suggest you browse each sorority’s national website and social media accounts. These will help you get a feel for the overall purpose of the sorority. Think about these questions as you search: What are your thoughts and impressions? Can you see yourself participating? Does the sorority share the same values as you?
When recruitment week arrives, be ready to ask questions! By asking questions, you can compare and contrast each sorority. Ask about academics, dues, and member expectations. Some sororities require members to maintain a certain grade point average, and others may require you to attend study all hours, or both!
Sororities have different pricings. Don’t be afraid to talk about finances; you have every right to know where your money will be going. Depending on your budget, dues may be one of several key decision factors. As a member, you want to know the expectations. Most sororities have a chapter meeting once a week. In some instances, stricter sororities may fine you a small fee for missing mandatory events(such as chapter).
During recruitment rounds, try remembering which sororities you felt comfortable around. You want to surround yourself with people who are similar to you. Pay attention to personalities and interests. Not only should you ask questions about the sorority, ask the member you’re speaking to about her interests. Sharing common interests is important to keep in mind. It helps you reflect on who held a great conversation.
Last but not least, don’t let anyone influence your decision! Many people go out for recruitment with a friend or roommate. Just because your friend has made a decision doesn’t mean yours has to be the same. Stick to your gut. The decision you wind up making will be what is best for you!
