Recruitment is a lot different now compared to previous years. Though the glitter and glam on bid-day is fun for active members, it can turn away quieter potential new members. As a part of the oldest Gen Z wave, I wanted to share some of what I know about recruiting my generation fora sorority!

Over the past three years, I’ve noticed that signs-ups for formal recruitment have declined. Are the girls–who aren’t signing up–assuming that sororities are like the stereotypes in movies? Do they find large groups overwhelming? Is it because of financial concerns? Looking at it from different perspectives, these are all possible assumptions. These assumptions do not mean potential new members are not interested. You have to share all the information about your sorority – not just the good stuff. An article on Forbes mentioned that transparency is important for attracting Gen Z. Here are some things to consider:
Keep it Personal
It’s one thing to share promotional recruitment content on social media to spread the word. But a personal invite to sign up for recruitment is what will drive potential new members to try it. Some girls might need that little nudge!
Time is Valuable
When encouraging potential new members to go out for recruitment, you’re asking for their time. During recruitment, these girls lose time they could have used to study or grow in other areas. Make it worth their while!
Authentic Content
Are your chapter social media channels showing authentic content? Yes, I know it’s so much fun editing content and having photoshoots. But remember to include academic achievements, philanthropy events, and community services.
Emphasize Academics
School comes first. Share what your sorority does to strengthen academic skills. For example, my chapter has mandatory library hours. These potential new members understand how much college costs. They take their academics seriously!
Financial Transparency
It’s easy to talk about the good things you have to offer. So, don’t blindside a potential new member–college is pricey as is. Break down the pricing. What do dues include? Most include a new member fee, badge fee, initiation fee, national dues, and chapter dues.
Remember to Have Fun
I know most of what I’ve mentioned is serious. But you want to give these girls a great experience! Your personality, delivery, and energy will be just as important when recruiting.
Ultimately, the final decision is up to the potential new member. Again, transparency is crucial! From my experience as a Gen Zer, I weigh the pros and cons of almost everything. I ask myself: is it worth it? It’s a pretty big commitment; I can only assume many girls do the same!
